Cloud-Native Solutions Powering the Future of Online Gaming

3 min read

The Invention of Cloud-Based Technologies

The first concept of the cloud was created in 1963 when MIT received $2 million worth of funding from DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Agency). The university was given the task of creating a computer that could be used by two people simultaneously. The gigantesque computers communicated using reels of magnetic tape. This primitive “cloud” could be accessed by two or three individuals at the same time.

During the next several decades, computer engineers continued to develop cloud technology. The first modern cloud version was launched in the 1990s. The first software company to successfully implement cloud usage was Salesforce Inc. in San Francisco, California in the United States. The business idea was based on the idea of using technology to deliver software programmes to end users who could purchase it by ordering it on demand. The idea was cost-effective for businesses and was an immediate success. In 2002, Amazon’s retail services were web-based. The downside was that they used massive amounts of storage. Amazon wanted only to use 10% of its storage capacity and decided to experiment with the use of cloud computing. The experiment was a success, and their computer storage was efficiently maximised. Other companies soon followed their example.

In 2006, Amazon Web Services was launched and offered its cloud services to clients and other websites. Google created their own web services in the same year starting as two separate products and then was merged into Google Docs.

Private clouds were first developed in 2008, and by 2010 OpenStack developed private clouds that could be used by the general public. The cloud has traditionally been used by application developers, but it is now an integral part of the everyday lives of the general population to store most of our data and free up space on our mobile phones and other computing devices.

How Are Cloud-Based Technologies Changing Online Gaming?

Gone are the days of bulky game consoles and PCs that ran on hefty amounts of hardware and needed a power processor, memory and graphic cards for an enjoyable gaming experience.

Cloud-based computing has transformed the gaming landscape from being local games and gamers into a large interactive online community of millions of users. These like-minded gamers engage and interact on cloud-based online gaming platforms which feature innovative and modern software designs featuring smooth execution of gaming programmes. This stable infrastructure means increased efficiency and faster game updates. Coupled with the seamless delivery of new content meant that waiting lengthy periods of time to upload new gaming programmes or software updates is a thing of the past.

Cloud-based games receive updates to their servers which means that players have easy access to the latest versions of any game of their choice. Cloud-based games also have a reduced latency (the delay between an action and the player’s response). Games are more reliable and game streaming is uninterrupted even in regions that have slower internet speeds. To ensure the best gaming experience for users, traffic will be automatically diverted through less congested channels. This increases the speed of responses and is essential in multiplayer gaming, where making split-second decisions is crucial to success. This continual seamless flow of new content enhances the longevity of games, creating increased levels of player satisfaction. The remote cloud servers have been designed to ensure that they can accommodate any number of multiple players and there is also the built-in feature that allows players to interact socially and competitively in real-time with other players around the globe.

The Cloud and Modern Software Help Gaming Platforms Run Smoothly

The safety of online gaming is of paramount importance. Now that games no longer run from local devices, there is a greater risk of cyber attacks. Game developers have solved this problem by storing sensitive user data inside the “Cloud Fortress”, which is practically impenetrable. Continual monitoring means that any security issues that arise are addressed straight away, ensuring that players spend time enjoying online play in a secure environment.

Cloud games are run from a single computer which means that it is easy to identify and fix operating software or any other technical issues that may arise. Issues be addressed and be solved through remote access by the gaming platform provider. The process is so efficient that gamers remain unaware of the problems which creates an uninterrupted and enhanced online gaming experience.

The ongoing development and implementation of technology such as Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and AI is creating gaming environments that feel more realistic and interactive, which enhances and creates the seamless and personalised experience that gamers expect.
