Think Beyond the Walls of Your Office

3 min read

A few years ago, a colleague of mine questioned the time and effort I dedicated to organizing Meetups in and outside of Bengaluru, all without any monetary compensation. “Why are you wasting such an enormous amount of time on these free events?” they asked. Little did they know that this year, their perspective would undergo a remarkable transformation as they climbed the ladder of entrepreneurship and discovered the true value of community engagement. 🚀💭

It’s not uncommon for people to underestimate the power and impact of community involvement. At first glance, dedicating countless hours to organizing Meetups might seem like an unnecessary investment, especially when there’s no immediate financial gain. However, the rewards of fostering a vibrant community extend far beyond monetary benefits. 🌟🤝

Last month, I was invited as a guest speaker at LTIMindree in order to persuade their engineering team to get involved into the community efforts. It was a great opportunity for me to share my story with them and here’s the blog that highlights the major points that I covered during the first 40-minutes talk.

Professional success should not be confined to the four walls of an office or limited to individual accomplishments. By engaging with a community, you can unlock a multitude of opportunities and experience exponential growth in your career.

Early phase of my career

During the initial phase of my career, I primarily operated within the walls of an office. In 2007, I joined Logica CMG as an IT Consultant in the R&D department, where my responsibilities included serving as a System Administrator. I vividly recall the days of working with Virtualbox, spinning up virtual machines to facilitate developers in creating their testing environments. After spending two and a half years at Logica, I transitioned to VMware through a contractual position. This role involved testing VMware ESXi versions 4.1 and 5.0. Although my scope was limited to Guest Operating System testing as a contractor, I relished the vibrant atmosphere and the opportunities for growth, thanks to the exposure to cutting-edge technology. When the contract ended, I embarked on a new chapter at Dell (now known as Dell EMC).

During my fulfilling eight-year tenure at Dell EMC, I began as a System Associate and rapidly advanced to the position of Lead Engineer within a span of three to four years. I dedicated significant time to managing and testing 100s of physical servers located in the Dell R&D Center. I am grateful to Dell EMC for granting me the freedom to delve into Docker for the first time. Despite the initial challenges in persuading my team about the benefits of Docker(OpenUSM project), I persisted in exploring this technology. It was during this period that I started envisioning a professional life beyond the confines of an office. I became actively involved in the Docker Bangalore Meetup community events, which proved to be a transformative experience.

I started writing Docker related blogs in my personal blogging site Collabnix. Collabnix today attracts millions of DevOps engineers and with over millions of subscribers.

The Docker Bangalore Meetup community played a pivotal role in reshaping my life. With a membership exceeding 13,000 individuals and organizing more than ten events annually, this community has been a profound source of inspiration. From the initial gatherings of over 400 participants to the exponential growth it has experienced, the community has provided countless avenues for learning and personal development.

Individually I Specialize, Together We Tranform

Individually, we may specialize in specific areas, but it is when we come together as a collective that true transformation occurs. The collaborative spirit and shared knowledge of the community have taught me the significance of unity and the remarkable outcomes that can be achieved by working in harmony. Together, we have the power to effect substantial change, not only in our professional lives but also in the broader realm of technology and innovation.

Engaging with a community can open doors to a wider array of opportunities and foster professional growth in various ways.
